I joined the High Desert Shotokan Karate club in Hesperia this year.
Boy did I have to do some catching up! My boys, Alex and Gabriel had already been in
the class since August of 2007...
Let me tell you, those kids
developed some skills!
The boys are naturals at a
lot of the training.
I took it for granted because I thought it was easy. -based on
how easy my boys made it look!
  BOY WAS I
WRONG!
As soon as I had my first
workout,
I found out that the
healing factor in a 41 year old
is not nearly as good as a kid
10 or under!
While my boys can do a couple of hours of class and then go play on endless energy, I found myself doing two
hours and wanting a hot shower, comfy couch and a few ibuprophen. Soreness takes
days on people our age.
But hard work, some bruises and a lot of sweat paid off!
In late June the big day came when we all tested for our Orange belts.
You can see me and my boys doing our kata on my youtube page here:

Again, my boys did it so naturally. They set the bar pretty high for the old man!
I was so proud the day we all received our belts. I have to thank Sensei Marquez for allowing me the honor to test
alongside my boys. Physically, I now feel better than I have in 20 years! (What a great side effect to just wanting to do
an activity with your kids.) I hope one day, when my kids are grown up and talk to their kids about it, they talk about
how cool it was to make the old dog, I mean Dad, learn a new trick.
